Cervical Cancer Symptom
Cervical microdiscectomy is an orthopedic surgery which is conducted to remove the prolapsed intervertebral disc tissue located between the cervical vertebrae. The prolapsed disc material compresses the nerve root, which results in cervical pain, numbness, and weakness around the muscles supplied by the nerve root. In addition to removing the disc material, a spine fusion surgery is also conducted, which is meant to fuse the vertebrae and reduce mobility at the juncture, in order to maintain the adequate space, which reduces future chances of recurrence of nerve compression. Going abroad for cervical microdiscectomy offers low cost and high quality solutions for patients.

There are two basic approaches to conducting the microdiscectomy procedure- the anterior approach and the posterior approach. The selection of the approach is determined by the medical condition and profile of the patient, the urgency, and severity of the symptoms of compression. Both approaches have their own pros and cons

Anterior approach: It is, the more preferred approach as it provides easy access and is relatively less complicated. In this approach, a cervical fusion (in which a bone graft is placed between the disc spaces to prevent recurrence) is required. The common complications of the approach include difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness of voice, damage to the trachea and the esophagus. The frequency of recurrence is higher in this approach, compared to the other approach.
Posterior approach: This approach is less frequently used as the pathway is more complicated and access is limited. However this approach doesn't require a cervical fusion procedure to be conducted. The approach also reduces the incidence of various post operative complications listed in the anterior approach.
Surgery after-care for cervical microdiscectomy
Both the approaches are equally effective to alleviate pain and symptoms of nerve compression. Avoiding strenuous physical work and undertaking simple neck exercises are an essential part of recovery.
